New Book: Super Strings, Parallel Universes Hello to all the Folks --
Do you remember when super strings were a highly buzzworthy concept? The entire universe was supposedly made of super tiny little strings, trillions of times smaller than electrons, and these tiny strings were supposed to resonate at lots of different frequencies just like the strings of a violin.
For a while, all the universities were hiring super string people. But then otherscientists began to realize that there weren't any laboratory experiments that could test this concept, so super strings went into decline.
However, the field seems to have been revitalized recently. I'd like to recommend a very interesting book on this subject by Michio Kaku entitled "Parallel Worlds." It seems that the super string concept is very closely tied to the "many universes" type of cosmology, and the entire field is now heating up again. This book is copyright 2005 so it covers the newer revolution vis a vis strings, and you can get it through Amazon for less than $10.
If there are any sci fi writers in our forum, they should be interested in the various new parallel universe concepts discussed in this book. At last, here are some authentially new ideas that haven't already been used by Arthur C. Clarke or Isaac Asimov. The first part of the book reviews various cosmological theories that predate super strings, and you get a whole different angle on Einstein, Hubble and Co. when these giants of the 20th century are discussed against a background of the latest cosmological thinking.
Very readable, and highly recommended ---
