The 102 I have the spot matrix and Chromatic focal shift info in the photo section of the forum.

Jim,
while I am no brain surgeon, I am still having trouble locating the details of the Maksutov optical sets, even with the services of the Google Translator. If you have a fix on what is available, and the price, please let me know.
Regards,
Gary

Sorry Gary,

That info isn't provided. You will need to contact Andrey directly and give him a list of your requirements ect size, material to generate a figure.

Hi Jim,
Astreya main plan is to realize ALL mine APO-projects. There're a lot of, so I hope that we'll offer one of them in 2008. It will be a lens with aperture of 130mm or even more (I hope 152 or 180 F/7.5). All depends on glass price/quality we'll can get.
About telescopes. Yes, we offer 130 and 152 SAPO telescopes and now we don't plan to produce 102 and 180 scopes. In general, 102 lenses are intended, basically for the internal, Russian market. As for 180mm scopes, we're searching a partner to produce the tubes for them.

Andrey,

Sorry for so many questions, but since I have you, how about a little biography about you. How did you get started with optics, astronomy? Did you attend a school for optical design? I think everyone here would like to meet an expert like yourself and find this a real treat.

Thanks,

Jim Fusco

OK, Jim. Here is my biography in few words.
I graduated from the Moscow University of Radio Engineering, Electronics and Automatics in 1982. My speciality - optical and optical-electronic systems. After the university I worked in scientific-research institutes, was engaged in development of optical-electronic systems for various purposes. I started designing of astronomical devices in Intes company. It were Maksutov-Newton and Maksutov-Cassegrein telescopes, accessories and the process equipment for manufacture and quality control of telescopes. But my great interest was to make refractors. So I left Intes and started designing APO systems. Astronomy became my hobby after I started to design optics for amateur telescopes.

Andrey,

I was wondering how long does it take to make a complete lens. Also what is the differances between a mass production lens and a custom lab made lens. Do quality issues like striae, stress and homogenitey get over looked by large compaines?

Jim

Hi Jim,
making a complete APO lens is rather difficult process. First of all it's necessary to check glass quality: striae, stress and homogeniety, etc.
After that we should measure dispersion of all glass types in the design, make correction of the design for real glass dispersions and correct tools for polishing. Now we can make spherical surfaces on glass blanks and polish.
Quality control on each technological stage! Then coating, assembling, adjusting air spaces and final control. We should do mechanics as well. So, you can see that this technology is rather complicated and takes a lot of time.
About difference between a mass production lens and a customer made lens. You see that even for mass production lenses we have to make some correction in design and tools. When we do customer made lens, ALL the design and tools are unique, so the price is more and time for producing is also more than for standard lens model.

The process is very extensive, and more so for a high performance lens. Is there a final test for the lens and if so how is it performed and how should it understood by the owner. Because some makers seem to point out one thing and hide the other also not offering glass type. I see with Astreya makes no secret of glass type or other information about the lens.
I see now, that the process of making of the lens is the lens is the difficult part and method is most important.

Thanks,

Jim
