Default Deep Space Spectrograph

I would be very interested in hearing details from any user of the SBIG Deep Space Spectrograph unit. I've tried my luck with a grating and a homebrew prism unit, but the results were less than "stellar".

The DSS looks like a quality unit at a reasonable price.

Try Dale Mais' site. He is one of the most active in this area. A real neat guy as well. Good luck

Ray,
I am using the DSS7 with the SBIG 402XME. It works very well. I am using a 10 inch F/12 telescope. I have done planetary nebula, i.e. Blue Snowball and others. I used it on a comet and the crab nebula. It is a fairly low res spectrograph but you can do a-lot with it. For example, the Crab Nebula has two peaks for OIII & Ha. If you measure the distance between the two peaks of either Ha or OIII (better with Ha) doing some minor calculations you can determine the rate at which the crab nebula is expanding.
I have also imaged the rainband, next to D solar band in daylight skies and the solar spectrum without using a telescope.
You can also image the light pollution without a telescope.
It comes with software, that is quite good. I use excel for the graphing of the spectra. If you have excel let me know and I can send some files. I enjoy using it.
Thanks!!!!
