| "A can of Mars!". This is adelightfully simple but very effective way of identifying surface albedo features on Mars. By using a standard map like http://www.damianpeach.com/images/ma...dp_labeled.jpg You can enlarge, increase the contrast of the labels, etc then cut the finished product and wrap it around an appropriate sized metal can. If you know the central meridian of Mars at the time you observe you will find the can most helpful in identifying what you see. Remember to take into account the following information: use Universal Time for your calculation of the central meridian, place South at the top (avoid a diagonal as it will drive you nuts trying to figure out if you need a mirror image upside down or not!) You might find this website helpful when you are getting ready to do your Mars observations. http://freeware.intrastar.net/astronomyone.htm is a freeware website where you can download Meridian and other neat free programs. This Mars opposition will be a good one. It occurs on 12/24/07 when Mars will have a high declination of +27d. At local midnight Mars will be ~74d high in the sky. However it will no be especially close to Earth. Mars will only be ~15.8" in diameter so medium/high magnification will be needed. Enjoy making the Mars can! You will find it to be a true "gem" in your observing strategies this coming winter. best, Phil Dombrowski |
