| Good to hear, John. I have some nice 15x70's, but I'd really like to look through some image stabilized ones some day. ...Neil

| Neil, I have : Orion 14 x 70 & Celestron 20x80 both Japan made and both are for sale... I ordered a pair of the 15 x 50 is after reading some of the cn posts and they will be my night pair. the optics on the Canon's are excellent even without the is feature. But once you push the button movement just stops ! the 15x50 is have Ed glass and both have a field flattener in the ep lenses and a 3 yr warranty OK OK I'm off my RANT... Good to see this site still working.. John

| Hi Guys A rule of thumb I've heard for the magnification required to split doubles....... 300, divided by the separation = the minimum magnification required. This assumes good optics, 20-20 vision, and excellent 'seeing' conditions. Personally, I rarely get the seeing conditions, and don't have the visual acuity for that though But- Good 10x binoculars should be able to split a 30" double, under ideal conditions. (Albireo separation is 35" according to Cartes du Ciel) Personally, I can routinely split Albireo with 15x70 on all but the worst nights - don't recall ever managing the feat with 10x - but I don't have IS, and I pretty-much never mount my 10x50s on a tripod. |
