Default Moon Filter for Difficult Doubles

Hello All,

I read in an old Meade catalog that the Moon filter works to help with seperation of double stars. Whats the consensus on this?

Clear skies,
John

Hi John
Never tried a Moon filter, but I have had success using a variable polarising filter.
It does pretty much the same thing as a Moon filter (cuts the glare from a bright element) but is infinitely variable between about 5% and 99% light throughput, you can 'tweak' the effect to get the best results.

Visual for me.
I'm almost exclusively a visual observer - I do a bit of sketching at the eyepiece, but that's the full extent of my imaging.

Hi Carlos,

Just the opposite for me....mostly photo, now.
I do have one of the polarizers and it worked very well.

How do you adjust your polarizer? If it is mounted on the diagonal or eyepiece, you'd have to pull it out to rotate it?

Does anyone make a polarizer that fits between the diagonal & telescope, like a filter wheel... that way you could adjust it with a side lever while still viewing. Thanks.

There are some types which need to be removed to adjust them - I have the type that can be unscrewed into two separate pieces.
This fella http://www.firstlightoptics.com/prod...ri_pola_filter
I put one part on the end of the diagonal, and the other part on the end of the eyepiece - then it's just a matter of rotating the eyepiece to adjust the effect.

Carlos,

Thats a great idea. Ive got the 2" version, and have had to take the diagonal out to adjust it. I never thought of separating the 2 like that. (Thats why Im here, to learn from everyone!!) Thanks.

Kory
