Default M42 - Orion Nebula widefield...

I took this the same night as M82. I was just foolin' around while waiting for m82 to move above my house. This is a single exposure of about 3 mins using the digital rebel 350d and a 75mm-300mm lens at full zoom.

Hi Ed,

This just shows you how nice of a widefield of this area that the camera can take....just needs about another twenty or so exposures, and it would go really deep.

I'm amazed at how well that camera works, especially in bringing out the red. A couple hour set will really be an exceptional wide field shot.

Thanks guys. My cam is unmodded just incase u wanted to know. I think i'll try a few widefield exposures next time. I think you're right, it should turn out to be a nice pic.

Ed,

That's a nice shot.

I am always amazed at how far technology has come since I first became interested in astronomy in the early 1980's. I remember drooling over a Meade DS-10 and a cooled film camera that used dry ice!

Cooled camera manufacturers may need to rethink their business model within the next few years. Another generation of development on DSLRs (in about 3 yrs), and their capability and price point will really tax the credibility of a decision to go with the cooled camera, at least a one shot cooled camera.
