| Last Saturday I attended the 2007 Northeast Astronomy Forum and Telescope Show. As usual, there was an incredible array of telescopes, eyepieces, mounts, electronics, and other astronomy gear and accessories. Time passes at an accelerated rate at NEAF and with attending three of the lectures, all of which were excellent, and arriving later than I ever have before I didn't have much time to inspect all the vendor booths. However, I did have a long look through a new Tele Vue prototype eyepiece known as the Ethos. It was 1.25"/2" hybrid barrel 13mm with a 100 degree apparent field of view (AFOV). The field of view and rectilinearity of the Ethos were really quite amazing. Of course, Uncle Al declined to answer questions about the design for proprietory reasons. After comparing the delineated AFOV boundaries, 82 degrees just doesn't seem so big anymore! There has been a lot of speculation already about just how much these oculars will cost. Tele Vue employee Paul Dellechiaie was apparently responsible for much of the design. Information on the Ethos is available at http://www.televue.com/engine/page.asp?ID=311 Dave Mitsky |
