Actually, with the availablility of modern software (ATMOS, OSLO LT), some basic knowledge (Rutten and van Venrooij), and some of the helpful folks on the web, it is quite easy today to design optical systems. It is not some arcane skill.

Knowing what glasses are easily available in the necessary quality seems to be the major issue. (And some combinations are easily discerned with a little research on the web.)

Well, maybe. But to me it's highly doubtful that just having all of this would make a person another TMB.
