Default I just received my new Paramount ME

I received my new Paramount ME mount a few weeks ago and now I am forced to make a decision regarding the type of pier that I will use for my new mount.

I plan to put several different scopes on it including a Takahashi TOA-150 and a Mewlon so I was thinking that a 40" high x 10" pier should do the intended job. Any suggestions?

John

Congratulations, that is one heck of a mount.
I am not that lucky, but was faced with the same decision a couple of years ago when I made a Pier for my Orion Atlas Mount.
Since I planned to use the pier for my refractors, the criteria I used was to have the eyepiece at a comfortable level to allow me to observe while standing when the scope was aimed at the horizon. This allowed me to assume a comfortable standing or sitting position all the way to the zenith. At first it looked like the pier was too tall, but I am glad I stuck with my dimensions.

Congrats John on such an awesome mount. I was trying to swing the EM400 and got the NJP! I could not even think about getting a Paramount ME!

A lot of folks including some of the Bisque brothers use the PWTech Monolith pier. There is a new line of Monolith (LT version) that is lighter and less expensive but rock solid like the original model (like I use). I think the new models should be shipping either in January or early February. Check out this forum for more information: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pwtech/

Hi John,

I also have the Paramount ME and just to add my 2 cents, I would suggest what other people here have mentioned, be comfortable standing when viewing near the horizon and then just get an observing chair for views near the zenith etc.

My pier is homemade out of 1/4 inch plate (very strudy) and is roughly about 40 inches high, maybe a little higher.

I also have a thread on cloudy nights showing my observatory build (under my name, Neil) you are welcome to have a look.

I also have a TOA 130, beatiful scopes for a great mount.
You'll enjoy it...

Regards,
Neil.

Being that we are a dealer for them (PWT) I am of course biased but they do make an absolutely gorgeous pier!! I am really looking forward to their new Monolith LT design. Hopefully this pier will be less complex and easier for PWT to assemble hence be able to produce more in a faster period of time.

I have say, that if the new Monolith is anything like the original, I can't imagine a better pier.
I have the original and have made several custom top plates to let me mount the ME/C14, a APT wedge/Q7 combination, and even my Nexstar 8SE mount. That one has been significantly modded to take Ray's plates, so it can hold the original 8SE OTA, a Sky90 or a 3.5Q.
It looks a bit odd, a Sky90 on a monolith, but its so solid, has never made sense to use anything else.
Good luck with your ME!!

A Sky 90 on a Monolith?? You HAVE to take a picture of that and post it here!! I would LOVE to see that!!!

I absolutely agree with you thought that the original Monolith is/was a work of art regarding its stability and beautiful machine work. The LT version should be every bit as nice knowing how PWT designs its products.

Hi
I will echo what VR just said about the Tri-Pier 2, I have one with my Paramount ME, C14, TMB 115 etc. It is set on some pier tech wheely bars for portability and is very sturdy. The elevation mechanism is buttery smooth although I don't find the need to use it much as I mainly do imaging. Have a check on my website below for pictures and more info.
Regards
Gordon
