Thumbs up My Light Cups

Well, well, well, so glad to here. Hopefully more Tele Vue users will join up .

I'm Ron B[ee], the 4-inch and 5-inch tall Evangelist. I own the 4-inch TV-102 and 5-inch NP127 both of which are christened the "Light Cup" . I just love Tele Vue refractors, the way they're made, the package. I also own some some Naglers, Radians and TV Plossl (no Panoptic yet ), an various Tele Vue accessories. I also felt very fortunate to have met both Al and Judy Nagler and David and Sandy Nagler, both fine down-to-earth gentlemen and lovely ladies and very fine couples.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Adirondack, BT Technologies and OPT for making this place possible and for the free ads service these sponsors made possible. I also like the UI much better too .

Ron,

You know, I guess I was unaware that you didn't own a Panoptic. And I thought I knew you! I think you need to remedy that situation fairly soon. I know you have the 31 Nagler, so I'll suggest you pick up a 19 Pan and enjoy the view in both of your Light Cups through that!

Thanks Clyde.

You're right on the money as usual. I had always thought of the 24mm Pan but with the 31mm the 19mm would be a better step up.

Greetings to Ron, Clyde, and all,

I read the Yahoo TV group constantly and post occasionally (ID "Leicaguy"). I think it is a great forum. Maybe we can "snag" a few more TV users with this new forum (some people just do not utilize Yahoo services for whatever reason). I agree with you, Ron. I like this interface much better than most forums I have seen.

My "babies" are an NP101 on a Gibraltar and TV76 on Vixen PortaMount. I use a TV Binovue with 24 Pan, 11 T6, and 7 T6 pairs. General cyclops viewing is done with a 26 T5, 17 T4, and 12 T4. My high power views are through 3, 4, and 5mm Radians.

And Ron, you may be interested to know that I recently sold my Feathertouch Crayford style focuser that I had on my NP101 in favor of the TV Focusmate. This was due, in part, to your positive review of the Focusmate. I originally chose the Feathertouch for esthetic reasons. I thought the TV unit looked clunky, too much like an "afterthought". Ultimately I wanted to change back to the TV Feathertouch for the same reason....esthetics. I didn't like the idea that my NP101 didn't "look" like and NP101 any longer with the Feathertouch. Now that I have made the change I am very glad I did. Not only do I like the fact that my scope is "all Tele Vue" again, I actually like the operation much better. I think it is the larger focus knob. In any event, I am very pleased with the switch. I doubt I would have done it if I had not read your review.

Clyde, I just left the AM Refractors forum. I don't know how you can put up with that. The guy you were sparing with just made a recent post in which he made a blanket statement that Nagler eyepieces are plagued with distortion and unsharp field of view. He is a real piece of work. He goes by Bill G....I hope no one confuses me with him ;-) I think I'll stay away from that forum.

Clyde,

I meant the Yahoo refractor forum, not the AM forum. My mistake.

Hi,
I recently installed a Focusmate on my TV-85 as I also wanted to stay Tele Vue only. Some people mention that it is a bit ugly because is sticks out so much to the side. Personally I think it looks fine, works beautifully and actually falls nicely in position when using the mount handle (I have them both mounted on the right hand side).
On another subject, I have been using a small camping stool for viewing. You can't change the height of it so it is quite uncomfortable to use. I did a bit of research on the net and came up with a DW Drums 9100 drum stool. It is very well made and quite a bit cheaper than the Tele Vue version. The weather hasn't been too kind of late so I've only got to use it twice. However, it makes a huge difference being able to sit comfortably when viewing, and to be able to change height with the push of a lever.

Simon,

Yea, I thought it looked weird in all the pictures i saw of it. However, now that I have it my opinion has changed. Not only does it look better than I thought, the new placement of the focus knob is actually better for me (as you noted). I am now contemplating the purchase of one for my TV76 as well. Although, I have not yet resolved the issue of whether or not the scopes will fit in the original cases without some alterations to the case.

As for an adjustable seat, I agree fully. I have chair that is adjustable from about 10" to just under 30". It makes a world of difference when I am at exactly the right height and comfortable.

Bill

Hi Bill,

I knew you meant the Yahoo refractor forum. And I can't imagine anyone mixing you up with the other gent who shares your initials!! Actually, his blanket statement about Naglers being plagued with distortion and lack of sharpness is one of his more innocuous pronouncements! I won't bother to respond to him anymore and it looks like others are going to take that route as well.

At any rate, it's always nice to read your input as you observe from close to my folks home who live in Roanoke, Va. Great part of the country. Interesting about your Focusmate experience. I too, like the large knob, especially in the winter, and think it's a very well built and engineered unit. With my f/7 TV-85, I really don't find it a necessity, but I do keep mine as it's easy to install should I get the urge to do so. With a scope like your NP-101 and it's fast f/ratio, I'm sure the Focusmate is a great addition, even if you're only doing visual work.

Clear skies,
Clyde
